TREASURE ISLAND

rob collinson aka magnethead aka crab c is now rob collinson of the san francisco fire department paramedic academy team unit club or something like that. he graduated last week. heres some photos.

long speeches. but the history of the sffd was interesting kinda. did you know the chief is an old woman? turns out that rob's class/team/unit or whatever is the first of its kind. he's in class number 1.

sir yes sir. i didnt realize how hardcore these folks were. but you better be hard if im calling you to hose me down and pick up any limbs that just melted off and hook me up with a ride to the hospital.

oaths are hard and it made me want to write one for hamburger eyes. "i swear to update my blogg at least once a month for the rest of my life and i will choose death before dishonor."

YOGGING

5 things i hate about blogging:
1. who cares? really. who cares what i did last week, and how is it any more interesting than the nba playoffs?
2. secret lives revealed. what once may have been something special and/or sacred is now shared with hundreds. thus, taking any kind of mystery out of everyday. in other words, making the unknown known.
3. illusions and mirrors. if we really break it down, i sleep for about 8 hrs, im on my computer for about 10 hrs, that leaves about 6 hrs for me to run errands, eat, relax, shoot, develop, and print. and if you break that down, you can say that only about 5% of my life is captured on film. that being said, maybe only 1% of life is blog worthy. im pretty sure you dont want to see photos of me doing my laundry or shitting. maybe only the fun or memorable times are what you the reader get to see, thus creating a false perception that all we do over here is go out and get hyphy. its not true, mom. really im working alot. i only party on the weekends.
4. double dipping. this was a term i once heard during the internet boom in the late 90's. it refers to a photographer using the same photo for 2 different things, like selling a photo to a website and then selling it again to a mag at the same time. it's controversatial and relevant to the conversation because good content is hard to come by. and part of the validation of shooting photos is sharing it. presentation. delivery. sometimes even the smallest shittiest jpg version of a photo can ruin the nectar and splendor and surprise of seeing that same photo a second time in all its glory in the printed pages of a book or magazine or hanging on a nicely lit wall printed all big and framed.
5. the internet never sleeps. its always hungry. when i feel like watching a movie, or going to the beach, or doing nothing, i experience a nagging in the back of my neck where my blogg is itching and scratching and saying, "feed me".

5 things i love about blogging:
1. web content. no matter how trife, the bloggs still bring traffic to the site. the site is our number 1 "marketing tool". and i could probably put together a formula or map or whatever of the ratio of site "hits" to actual "sales".
2. escapism. i enjoy seeing what other photogs are up too. its news i can trust. its living vicariously through others. whats going on in nyc? whats going on in japan? whats going on on mars? even if one blogg is only .003% of reality, ill take it cuz you can add it to other bloggs and have a pretty good idea of whats what.
3. storytelling. its interesting to read into random stories and adventures. and photos that will probably otherwise never get seen, finally get to see the light because they are part of a bigger picture. in the blogg format these photos get validatation. they also get the added treatment of text to futher enhance the story.
4. second shots. often there are second shots and different angles of the same scenario. editing decisions can be rough at times, but bloggs are almost immune to editing. i mean i can really put up 50 lame photos of the same thing and people will still hit it up. whereas, in the printed world that would never fly.
5. its a celebration bitches. instead of inviting friends and family over to view contacts of photos of themselves last weekend at so and so's bday, protest, show, wedding, jam, rally or whatever. they can just hit up the blogg.
